  1. Just had a thought. |If the \revolution had not happened in 1776, it might have been the Southern colonies that rebelled against England, later, as the end of slavery approached! Reasonable speculation?
  2. I'm proud to say I've never watched that show. Seriously, though, look at the profiling that baby is obviously doing. I don't watch it either. I get all my vital information from the |National Enquirer. OK, I concede it must be him. It is not often you can recognise an adult from his baby pictures. My son Stu was cute but looks nothing like his now differently-cute self. #2 Andy, the Heartthrob of East York, looked sort of like a little pink sledgehammer.

  4. c'mon dggl, that isn't George, it is Honey Boo Boo's mother!
  5. I think your speculative timeline is plausible.Britain abolished slavery in 1833, and took measures to suppress the slave trade previous to that. Slavery was the dealbreaker for the United States. Without allowing slavery, the revolution may not have succeeded or the Republic been born. But in allowing it the Republic could not be sustained.
  6. I would hardly consider Marsha Incompetana (btw Adam love your coinage there) as a representative of mainstream media.
  7. Yes. When I first heard of it I felt merely sick with sadness, at the thought of his life - any life - ending at 17. And you know my feelings about the gun culture. But just discussing it here, while my feelings can't change, a lot of the passion has been diffused into areas of simple interest. Murder trials are painfully interesting, after all. And in this case there is so much missing evidence and conflicting testimony. Ideally, I would like to see the jury recommend a manslaughter conviction if that is possible, with a minimum or even suspended sentence. I don't care if Z goes to jail or not. But he killed someone, an unarmed someone. He didn't threaten or warn or wound someone, he shot him very accurately, through the heart.
  8. Ba'al Chatzaf Serves you right for cavorting around that golden calf.
  9. When I answered, I was in fact thinking only of myself and other women I know. Duh! Of course, I have heard of plenty, from my own husband and sons..and our car was hotwired once.It is a much more dangerous world for men than for women, especially young men.
  10. Of course I have felt afraid. I am the founding member of the Canadian League of Cowards. But being attacked or robbed on the streets of Toronto is just not one of the things I am afraid of.
  11. \ No. I have read news reports about robberies or attacks but not known any victims personally or even second hand. The worst things I have personally witnessed have been fatal car accidents.
  12. And in my younger days I walked around at night a lot, sometimes all night.
  13. That is a great area. But you are very rigid in not believing anyone who has not felt the same as you. I have never felt afraid walking around at night that I remember, and I have lived here 35years.
  14. Sorry, I missed it. So do you live in Jane-Finch or St Jamestown, and walk around in fear and trembling?
  15. Sorry Calvin, I just checked your profile and it doesn't say anything - I did not know you were Canadian too -- is it too intrusive to ask what province?
  16. Here is the thing, if Martin was on top of Zimmerman, in such a death struggle, how did he manage to pound the TOP of his head? He would have had to grab it hard and bend his neck, and would surely have got some skin under his fingernails, which his autopsy showed he did not.
  17. I agree with you about the jailing, so write your Congressman, because you have the highest incarceration rate in the world. It is obvious that on the evidence so far, you believe that Martin straddled Z and pounded his head, and so far I do not.
  18. Sanford, FL is not quite urban (population: 53,570 as of 2010). And they have a relatively higher crime rate than most cities in the US. Also, that Trayvon was never convicted of a crime does not mean that if he was not in school when he was caught fighting those several times he would not have been1.1079190 Yes, indeed. If only he had been jailed for fighting like you know he should have been, he would not have been loose to prey on poor helpless Zimmerman.\ A town of 50,000 people is an urban area to me. I grew up in a town of 3000. Even there there were neighbourhoods and areas. It was large enough to not know or immediately recognize everybody. Although when you are a kid, they always know you."You must be Jack Stuart's girl!" Yeah, since there is no past of must, |I had to be.
  19. I am assuming Zimmerman was sober when he encountered |Martin, I haven't seen any reports of breathalysing.
  20. Did Zimmerman have bruises from the alleged sucker punch? Did he have defensive wounds? Did Martin have Zimmerman's DNA under his fingernails, or hair traces indicating a head-grabbing? Where is the blood on the sidewalk (I know, it was raining). Slight correction to your post, Martin was not only never convicted, he was never even charged with any crimes. Zimmerman's charges you have explained, and I expect the defence will adequately explain this current one.
  21. Darrell, all kidding aside, you mention an important point that transcends religion and philosophy. I know personally that when I got married we had no ideas of defined rolls but managed to work things out to mutual satisfaction.
  22. "...a woman's roll in marriage...." That's too funny a typo in the context to let it go past. "Roll, roll, roll in the hay. It's fun!" -- Young Frankenstein Next Sunday: Man's roll as the Rock in marriage.
  23. Cathy, this is so stunning. I too had step-grandmother, sick mother, and family patterns which only occurred to me long after I was married myself. Obviously my experiences were very different from yours. Yet I wonder, when you married, did you just feel the guy was "right" because underneath you recognized a warmth like you felt from the O'Connors?
