Here is an anecdote,not a datum or support of any theory, just something I happen to know firsthand. A student of mine was seriously abused by her husband. By that I mean he imprisoned her in a room, deprived her of clothes, regularly raped and only allowed out of the house to attend ESL class, if she didn't he could not collect her welfare payments. He escorted her to the classes and collected her afterwards. I was the one who called the police and I had to testify at his trial. I heard later that his brother-0in-law said that he had tried to buy a gun to kill her, but the deal fell through, it is hard to get guns here, comparatively. She is still alive, not dead.
