  1. Carol, I'm dying to see a synopsis of your upcoming publication - what was it again? Uh yes - " A Pinko among Objectivists!" "(From Second-Hander to Prime Mover.)" It should be most entertaining. Just a peek.. "Under Their Very Noses.... How the Secret Plan was Accomplished by a Lone Intrepid Collectivist..." Can one be a lone collectivist? When one is only one one must!

  3. Now on OO there's Knucklehead Nicky saying Peikoff's post 9/11 sputum is, in effect, part of Objectivism. I don't know whether I should even bother replying. http://forum.objecti...=50#entry297147 I checked out the Knucklehead. If Gary Johnson knew he was representing this guy, I don't think he would be pleased.
  4. Of course he can. And try to obtain it, as best he can.
  5. Today David Weigel has rehashed the above at Slate, this time adding in material that takes ARI to task over foreign policy. The fact that he makes no acknowledgement of the diversity of opinion within "Objectivism" on this matter is something I find irritating. http://www.slate.com...cy_.single.html Today David Weigel has rehashed the above at Slate, this time adding in material that takes ARI to task over foreign policy. The fact that he makes no acknowledgement of the diversity of opinion within "Objectivism" on this matter is something I find irritating. http://www.slate.com...cy_.single.html I have not read this, but face it, even fairly knowledgeable outsiders think of of Objectivism as a wraparound philosophy, thanks to the overwhelming influence of Rand herself.. The basic principles are well-known. And in fairness, the infighting and diversity are of little interest to the outside world, compared to her influence on prominent figures there.
  6. In each case, someone else decides what you are worth. Industry standards, personal qualifications and record, what the market will bear. I maintain the validity of my comparison.
  7. I suppose I'm not old enough. I didn't get it. Well then you should have walked and not petered out with that run... Ninth, did you get my joke, you frisky calf you? I laughed at it years before I actually knew what it meant,
  8. lol I will respond with a Maritime one I think I have told before In a rural one room school house, Johnny is taken to task by the teacher for being absent the day previous. "Sorry, Ma'am, but I had to take the cow to get served by the Johnson's bull." "But Johnny, couldn't your father have done that?" "Well yes he could ma'am. But not as good as the bull."
  9. MEM, this excellent post reflects almost entirely my views on this subject. One thing struck me, although it is not about class in the way I was thinking of it. You earned $40 per hour for the same job for which you now earn #30/hr. You are obviously more experienced, skilled and qualified now than you were then; it is not about you but about the surrounding economy. I earn $40/hr for the same job that paid $26,/hr when I started doing it The timeframes are roughly the same. And I have not upgraded my qualifications in any significant way, as you have, in the intervening time. Obviously I have more experience, and I think I have more skill. But I am doing the same job and I am the same worker. The difference is of course the union, which is based on the individual worker and what he can be realistically acknowledged to be worth in money to the employer. That is all it is. "Respect and dignity" of course, are the emotive motors of union drives and startups, but it is always about money. What am I worth? Instead of waiting for the tax cuts to trickle down, as workers have been doing for the past thirty years, maybe they should remember Ayn Rand, who overcame her own great moral repugnance against social security and took what she deserved.
  10. Carol: Thanks for your concern. My blood pressure is 115 over 75. Repressing the emotions is a sure way to elevate blood pressure. If you resist, it persists. Branden makes note of this constantly. Blocking emotions creates dis-ease. Adam I hear tell that Howard Roark's blood pressure was 110 over 71. So Adam, you might want to up your daily runs from 8.5 to 9 miles per day. Either that or start swimming more often in the frosty waters of cool quarry lakes. Lol. My running days are over. You know the one about the old bull on top of the hill with the young bull looking down at a herd of Heifers right? And as to cool/cold quarry lakes ...there is always that shrinkage routine from that crazy Scotch comedian William "Billy" Connolly...http://en.wikipedia..../Billy_Connolly Carol: Thanks for your concern. Is it fit for my ears? How I love Billy Connolly, the Red Sandstone boy. A bride gift that keeps on giving if you marry a Glaswegian. Catch one if you can, singletons.
  11. Your are cruel one, Dear Daunce. Especially for those of us with Phd wives... You think that was cruel -- imagine what Paul H. has to go through: "Stop that sweetie, I need a cogent reply for Sunday --"Is it immoral to tie up your left shoelaces before your right ones? What does Dr. Peikoff do?" --- now I've only seen him with velcro strap running shoes --- could you call up for me and check? --just disguise your voice.--- stop it now---oh alright but after you call, ok?"....
  12. OK, I capitulate. Not BOW though, although I will retain the Committee and its premises to launch the gloatfest. Frankly, OO and Solo just do not yield anything new or good enough to match up with what appears on OL regularly now. First lurking, and now sampling exchanges amongst those you reference were what lured me onto OL in the first place and keep me happily occupied in the courtyard, hall and occasionally on the battlements.
  13. Oh, oh, ... if only I weren't so Respectable...brewers leavening agent....hockey sticks....moose chickens, cows...loons...it's too much....
  14. "Not tonight dear, I have to edit my thesis and prepare for my orals..."
  15. Aw, cut him some slack. He has been married to a schoolteacher for a long time. When he met her she was a hot young model dammit, and then she had to go in for all that cussed book-larnin'.
  16. I think those two guys are the Secret Service. The biker vote might just make the crucial difference in the election.
  17. For crying out loud, did you not notice the Middle I signed with? People do not react to new people with love or hate. Usually, especially on this forum, it is polite interest. Love and hate are for real-life , personal relationships, not internet discussions. Of course over time these can become personal. But it is your ideas and arguments, not your personality whatever it is, that we respond to. We do not know you, but only what you say. Every individual has his own reaction to your writings and to their own evaluation of your study of objectivism. I have indicated mine. I don't hate you and do not feel repulsed. I don't love you either, why should I? Unlike you, I do not believe that love can be earned. I still like your ideas about wedding dresses.
  18. Maybe the damn things are trying to come home to roost again! Will the dumb clucks never learn? You Can't Go Home Again, Y'All! The cows found that out when they got out of the cab, suitcases in hooves, and found the door was locked.
  19. You are concluding that others are "repulsed" by you because you have not earned their 'love?" I think you are muddling your threads here, jumping to conclusions and also, reading your Rand in the wrong order. Start with what she wrote first. Peikoff is a commentator on Rand and Harriman is an advisor to Peikoff. Carol Excluded middle
  20. Being on something of a music jag lately, I came across a comment on a video of "Nessun Dorma"; "I pray to jussi bjorling not god." Listening to it, I know how the writer felt. The beyond-myself, everything-in-myself, great soaring response to music is like no other (non-physical) experience in life. The profound gratitude we feel to the composers and artists who give us that experience, is one of unmixed reverence (no matter what me may happen to know about their personal lives). And the personal sorrow that they could not give us more, is not unlike the sorrowof christians for the crucifixion or shi'ites for the death of Hussain. Frutz Wunderlich died at age 35. He was probably the greatest Mozart singer who ever lived. A biographer of Mozart commented on the "unearthly perfection" of his music, - Wunderlich gave it earthly perfection, his voice is a universe.Mozart himself died at 36, and I don;t doubt beamed upon Fritz from Musical Olympus, as Puccini did on Bjorling. Stan Rogers died at 33. He wrote his own songs so I am sure he has found his niche on the Mount where Wolfgang and Giacomo drop in to bicker from time to time, I never thought I would want to hear Ave Maria again (I have been to a lot of weddings) but hearing Wunderlich sing it, I forgot what song it was. I guess this is my version of value swooning-- so sorry, Perigo, but both those guys were greater than Mario Lanza. Not that he wasn't great.
  21. Oh, I'd be quite happy to gratuitously smear Biden too, but that is done so effectively by others here that there is no need. His own party routinely ridicules him so he is pretty useless as a target.
  22. His convention speech, and his marathon time as stated by him. Sorry Mikee, but "factual error" and "misstatement" do not rhyme with "Ryan".
