  1. Merlin, you of all people understand poetic justice! His greed sold Gretzky down the river, and his greed is finally putting him in jail. Not a pretty goal but the Pock is still caught in the net.
  2. Also, there are two organizations devoted full-time to publicizing her ideas and her books. That can't hurt.
  3. I find it odd that Ed finds it odd that TAS-approved topic choices are questioned on Objectivist websites. I admire the forbearance he has shown to the Soloists who regularly lambaste him on this subject.
  4. I am very glad that everybody does not ignore silly comments, otherwise I would post almost entirely in vain. To dismiss as silly comments that are essentially serious, on however minor a point, is something different though.
  5. The mills of the hockey gods grind slowly, but they grind exceeding small. Twenty-five years after committing the greatest crime ever perpetrated against Canadian hockey, Peter Pocklington is going to jail.

    What Recovery?

Sorry for the dupe, I can't remove it whatever I do, maybe MSK will kindly help. My Uncle Leonard was a trucker, he drove the Calais-Bangor route "the Airline" or as we locals called it, "Death Valley." We frequently drove down to visit relatives in Maine around the blind hairpin turns hovering above what looked like crevasses, a motoring experience I never had again until touring the Scottish Highlands. Never once did we drive that route without passing a bank with strewn car contents at the top and a vehicle at the bottom. Uncle Leonard drove it unscathed from 1950-1980, even in circumstances when he probably should have been scathed. Those who are about to truck, whatever your ideology, we salute you.

    What Recovery?

Back to the truckers. I have not found anything except repeats of the original you provided Adam, , wow!updated they say million of them will be protesting. The Canadian supporters say they will be protesting "creeping liberalism", I guess in general, because jeez it is hardly creeping here it is right out in the open. They say they will be reported on by Glenn Beck so I expect will get more info soon. Last time truckers went wild was about gas prices, maybe this is a component here.
  8. Michael, perhaps it is your marketing-writing focus that causes you to forget that novelists generally do not employ those persuasion-tugs techniques in their writing (unless they are aiming to a paint-by-numbers surefire seller - which usually backfires, unless the marketing of the novel is intense). The novelist expresses his story in his own voice, as best he can. That is all.
  9. Ths is a really interesting discussion, and I have more thoughts on Rand's ideas on the parent/child relationship I might gather later. You know, despite the long, scrupulous, arduous labour she gave to AS, I wonder if she put as much deep thought into all the implications of this scene as we are doing!
  10. FRATERNAL ORDER OF THE SACRED IGLOO Office of the Grand RE: SECRET PLAN Strategy 9 Tactic 11 Alright, who was it? How does this Michael Stuart Kelly come to be implying knowledge which is absolutely TOP SECRET to all but core members and everybody else involved in implementation, which is everybody, so whoever it was better, (1) Shut your big trap in future and (2) find out if he wants a payoff, and remember we went overbudget on the Training Camp Opening Party. Shape up, you know who you are. Those sultry southern climes are corrupting you. I know what Im talking about, I spent that winter in Ottawa with Claudine. And I mean it! Nanook Plan Coordinator
  11. Dear Sirs and Masdam, we are students of Russia very interesting in your ideas of I. Kant, we think Da! -Pyotr Nyet! - Evgeni

Or considering your Roman republic-influenced FFs, Diocletian or Caligula. Not Marcus Aurelius though!

    What Recovery?

I think Obama should be referred to as a different bloodthirsty dictator out of respect to Mike's cultural heritage.Genghis? Oops.

    What Recovery?

That was fast wasn't it? Seems to be American truckers protesting the Obama govt. gotHardly appropriate for Cdns to protest somebody else's govt imo- maybe there are common trucker interests I don't know about. Really going now!

They will go to their family doctors as usual. Most of them are Canadians.
  18. I am another VOS-first reader and my reactions to Atlas were much like Darrell;s. As you know, I had more of a don't-wanna-convert than a conversion experience!
  19. You are right, I had forgotten. Did I call him a hypocrite? Probably that and more. But I was talking about his public, not any private statements which were attributed to him. And I speak only for myself.
  20. Doug Bandler -- is that you reincarnated as Moralist?
  21. Michael, I do not recall posting any analyses of Rush Limbaugh's hypocrisy, nor do I recall any such discussion being posted here at all. I have heard of such instances but certainly would not have any fun spinning on such a well-worn groove. But I am not the representative of an organization devoted to the morals and ethics of Ayn Rand, and I don't think "the other side is worse" is much of an answer to legitimate questions.
  22. Carol, Come on. It discredits them. That's kind of obvious, no? Progressives do it all the time. I don't recall your protest about the uselessness of pointing out hypocrisy when the target was, say, Rush Limbaugh. Michael
  23. Yes, and how is pointing out hypocrisy in ideological opponents useful? Politics practically demands a suppression of some portion of one's complete idea package -- look at the recent rapprochement of Objectivists and libertarians, |And when Rand was a political activist, she supported Wendell Willkie who although an internationalist, hypocritically reached out to the isolationists - not that it did him any good,
  24. Not exactly nothing,,, he is still talked about as a candidate for Bishop. My life choices have put me here among other places, and I still earn a living.
  25. Your mentioning you are a Christian, Greg, prompted my observation. I was thinking of a relative who is an Anglican priest. I have known him since birth. After Harvard Divinity he entered the ministry and seemed settled as a bachelor pastor when lo and behold, at 40 married a divorced parishioner whom , ahem, he had been marriage-counseling prior. He became the stepfather of tw0 (one special needs) and then the father of two more. One of his kids has just come out publicly as gay. The effect of his life choices on him? Nothing, that I can see. He is the same well-balanced, energetic, cheerful, matter=of-fact, intellectual guy I have always known. He is busier now than ever, but seems to handle it easily. Not making any special point here, but I have seen the same thing in others who have a central belief, be it atheist or environmentalist or anarchist or whatever. We shape our lives to our personalities.
