  1. Just came across this thread again. Must agree with Brant, I was the same person from age 17-18 on, and Peikovianism at second hand could not change me, however I accepted the logics of Objectivism. People will think for themselves and be themselves always, however much they respect the Others who tell them how to be.
  2. Dear Diary, She has heard already (how??) and I was summoned for a very uncomfortable half hour..."Did Mr Beckham suggest the Palace as a venue?"... did you give a thought to my Queen Anne roses>" "Do you remember who Queen Anne was, William?"",,it was quite gruelling and I got Anne wrong the first time, thinking of the Tudors on telly. But she softened as dear Granny always does and said it was a progressive idea, and after all it will not recur for another 150 years. Whew! \ich dien W.
  3. Agree with Baal, Economics for example is not a science, nor is politics or anything else unprovable empirically, The hot air however, may produce something useful, since the Earth's helium resources are depleting alarmingly and real science has not figured out how to replenish them,
  4. What is truly sad, is the willingness of leading artists and capitalists of a leading American industry, to sing for their suppers to oligarchs and fascists, murderers and tyrants. Kanye West eg. Yeezus indeed.
  5. Adam loves women, period. he was a perfect gentleman on the phone, and if you think men are hard to deal with, try horses and buggies - all that weird leather!
  6. Thanks for that interesting anecdote Tony. I would imagine he had a good voice. Lower tenor-baritone. Fun fact, I spoke to Adam on the phone once. He has a good voice with an eccentric accent. I did not get much of a sample since I woke him up in the middle of the night to help me get back onto the forum with his techpertize. He was very nice about it however.
  7. Barbara should have been the heir, not Cousin Wimpy. Oh, well, she was spared a lot of grief.
  8. Now Branden looked strong, and many have attested he was charismatic. (Never heard his voice). But maybe he just did not photograph well, I do not see him as handsome - he looks a bit pudgy and smug.
  9. Also Roark was handsome, despite the hair. Optics matter. Look at Lenny P. just look at him. He looks kind and friendly, but also utterly weak and a little bit goofy. And his voice....
  10. Ellen, it was in the Obituary section which is paid for by the relatives of the deceased. .Published as submitted
  11. That is a relief. If only all sports fans were as rational as you. And Jonathan with his carefully-aimed Atlases. Just hope Kurt Russell and Ted Nugent keep their big mouths shut, phony LA Kings fans, you do not need them Clayton.
  12. PDS, glad I caught you online. I am warning all my friends, if you are planning to visit beautiful British Columbia before the start of hockey season, do NOT wear your bear costumes. You could cause Stoner to get dissed again and he is a good defenceman, the Wild need him on his A game without distractions.
  13. It has been pointed out to me that it is unseemly for me to make fun of Mr Wissler, since I could quite possibly be his mother.
  14. Reason Man, I believe you are an Indian citizen and resident. Why do you think Americans will listen to you?
  15. In your view the bottom or foundation is the boss, in mine it is the individual worker, in practice the two usually need each other.
  16. The rights and needs of the workers are not the "bottom". The bottom is value creation, which is what qualifies action as "work". If you are digging a hole and filling it back up, that is not work, that is a waste of time and effort. For those workers to have their needs (which are as relative as our expectations, by the way) met someone needs to be producing. And for that production to be valid people need to voluntarily spend money on it... which makes Capitalism the most democratic system there is. Not to mention Hostess, or have you forgotten about that already?
  17. Or by deciding, oh-so-objectively, who is human and who is scum.
  18. Dear Diary, I am rather proud of myself today, having carried off my plan as head of the Football Association to celebrate the 150th anniversary at Buck House, with a game between the two first 19th-century teams! (Dave wanted an all-star Premier League game with a gala ball but no, I said, amateurs are much cheaper). They will create a pitch in the gardens and it is unlikely they will break any windows. The tricky part is telling Granny of the plan. It will be in October however, and she is not usually in residence then. Perhaps she will not hear about it. Ich dien, W. Gooooaal!
  19. Rosie is still silent. It looks like she let Moeller have the last word! I expected better of her. You may think her narcissistic and crazy Brant, but she was saner than most of regulars now and not nearly as boring.
  20. Why does "Sister Act" come irresistibly to mind here? Only in waltz time.
  21. "Make or Break Harbour" , "Northwest Passage". "The Mary Ellen Carter"... and of course, "Garnet's Homemade Beer" (popular parody of "Barrett.s Privateers". My music.
  22. Let me guess - the German tutor was a handsome young man. It is heartening when scholars like George (Eliot and Smith both) show us that the most notable women scholars and artists did not achieve greatness by submerging their femininity. Practical sacrifices they undoubtedly made and concessions to the times they lived in. But they expressed themselves, their entire selves, and added much to the world. Ayn Rand too.
  23. I went back, and swam again, in the life giving water of family and history and the inescapable older self. My son brought his girlfriend (if she didn't like New Brunswick she would never be his bride, but she did, and I think she will) and I brought my stories and my perpetual need for transport (there is no bus service in southern NB due to Market Forces, thus everyone must be fetched from Saint John or Moncton or Fredericton if they do not have a car). The water is clearer and more welcoming than I remember. At the family picnic my oldest uncle hugged me hard, and I don't remember him ever hugging me before. My cousin says he is getting more sentimental as he gets older. At my cousin's cottage the lake is luminous and deliciously cool, inviting you to float forever with the sun on your face. My cousin has a kayak now, but I know I would overset it . maybe next year. When I will step into a new river, float in a new lake.
