Dennis Hardin
Thank you for the nice fun compliment and let me reciprocate. I admire academics who do not insist on being called Doctor everywhere (exemplar a certain once-just-Leonard who apparently was born with a fake stethoscope strapped to his scrawny chest).I have a friend who is a psychotherapist (just MA and license)and some of her clients like to call her Dr Russell, they feel more comfortable that way, and prefer to think of themselves as patients, not clients. She is very successful and I have often thought that one reason is that she has minimal sense of humour. I have known her from childhood and never known her to laugh spontaneously or make a joke herself. Her clientele is mainly family therapy and individual, rich people. Family and individual anguish are serious, and if they could have leavened their lives with humour, they may not have been in therapy in the first place.I've often read that psychiatrists (I don't k now any stats about psychologists or psychotherapists) have the highest suicide rate among medical professionals. I am not surprised. They already know that life is a "tragedy to those who feel and a comedy to those who think." And they have to feel and think, live consciously, all the time.Daunce,A therapist without a sense of humor is definitely working under a handicap. One of the most important things a therapist can communicate is a benevolent sense of life, and humor is a big part of that. I don’t think I would be comfortable with a therapist who didn’t smile a lot. You want to give the client the sense that life is fun. Daily life is just too grim without a huge dose of laughter. One reason a lot of psychotherapists off themselves is because they go into the field to cure their own mental health/emotional issues. That was at least part of my own motivation, which shouldn’t be hard for anyone to understand who grew up in the Deep South. I suspect the suicide rate among therapists has gone down since cognitive therapy became so popular. It really is applied Objectivism, and it has helped more clients than all the other schools of therapy combined. The “downward arrow” technique shows patients how to “check their premises” (Ayn Rand’s favorite phrase). BTW, I couldn’t care less whether anyone calls me Dr. Hardin. In fact, if they do, I usually tell them to knock it off.
Philip Coates
Dennis, I'm curious: Do you work for an organization or have your own patients or do you do therapy / see patients at all? Are you in contact with Edith Packer at all? I imagine she is retired by now. (Maybe you've already talked about your work on another thread.) 9thdoctor
Hannity with the "Brothers Beckel", Hannity praises the movie, then starts picking on the liberal Beckel, it's going way downhill already, oh well here's the link (it won't embed).http://video.foxnews.com/v/4612636/the-brothers-beckel-round-2-part-1/
9thdoctor
This is pretty funny. I thought the money speech wasn’t in the movie, I take it, though, that this snippet isn’t actually from the movie. The delivery lacks inner fire, it’s ok I guess.

Objectivism is insidious. I've mentioned how needlessly uncaring I was to that panhandler the other day. Just now I confessed to using epistemology in the classroom. I live in dread that someday I will log onto the ARI corner and post, "Looking for Dr Peikoff's lecture series on Hypothermic Metaphysics, 1997-2008. Will pay anything." Philip Coates
> Well that really sucked. The reason it sucked is because they mindlessly copied just the first few lines out of a very long speech. The most dramatic and graphic and compelling lines are after it gets rolling, especially toward the end.I was so pissed off, I transcribed the words, timed it and then selected the -best- lines from the speech to fuse together for the same length to make it more clear and more powerful, without having the novel in front of you. There is absolutely nothing Phil doesn't know exactly how to improve. Think about the possibilities for a vastly improved world if only more people read Phil's posts and took his advice. And why didn't the producers of the new Atlas Shrugged movie just hire Phil to write the screenplay in the first place instead of going with these doofuses they did hire?Incredulously,JR Edited March 30, 2011 by Jeff Riggenbach
