First you don't learn anything in university (from plenty of other videos) or what you learn is worse than useless. Then you can't pay the loan. What kind of deal is that? ... With the internet you have educational opportunities for almost free.

Civil engineers create the public and private works structures of our world, including

freeways, high-rise buildings, bridges, dams, roads, airports and water-treatment plants.

They plan, design and supervise the construction of these facilities. Civil engineers will

also design the world of tomorrow that could include habitats on other planets, plants that

generate power from new sources and infrastructure for new modes of transportation.

Civil Engineering Studies

At NMSU, civil engineering students can specialize in environmental, general civil,

geotechnical, structural and water resources engineering. They will follow a course of study

that encompasses engineering principals and analysis, mathematics and physical and social

sciences. Coursework includes engineering physics, mechanics, hydraulic engineering,

chemisty and environmental engineering, in addition to electives for the various civil

engineering options. Because of extensive hands-on experiences in internships, co-ops and

senior capstone design projects, civil engineering graduates are well prepared to be licensed,

practicing professional engineers.

Research Highlight

Some NMSU civil engineering students spend their summer inspecting more than 7,700

miles of roads in southern New Mexico for the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The results of their inspections are used to determine if maintenance or repairs are needed.

When she began her studies at NMSU, Theresa Aragon, civil engineering major, never imagined that she would one day receive a $40,000 annual grant from the National Science Foundation to support her research.

The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program is a prestigious fellowship awarded to students who have demonstrated their potential for significant achievements in the fields of science and engineering. GRFP provides three years of support to students.

Aragon will receive a $30,000 annual stipend, while another $10,500 is allocated for tuition and fees. This will allow her to focus her time and energy on her research. She is currently investigating the behavior of multi-story coupled walls using un-bonded post-tensioned precast concrete coupling beams under lateral loads.

"It has to do with the size and behavior of a structure and it's a lot of modeling on a computer," she explained. "Whenever [there is] an earthquake, buildings obviously move back and forth."

Aragon is working on using concrete materials that will help reposition the building to its original state. This research is an expansion of work done by her adviser, Brad Weldon, civil engineering assistant professor.

In his dissertation, Weldon conducted investigations for single-floor level structures, which demonstrated that the system offered many advantages for seismic regions.

Michael:

I am more convinced than ever that the four (4) year High School model and the four (4) year college model is dead and needs to be buried. With the technology we have today, the High School paradigm can and should be reduced to a maximum of two (2) to two and a half (2 1/2 years of actual attendance at a facility.

Additionally, the "school day" should be five (5) hours maximum with three (3) hours of actual work at a job in the real world. The school year should be ten and a half (10 1/2) to eleven (11) months.

The college paradigm should be a maximum of three (3) years with the same parameters. Using master teachers as on-line instructors we can shape the class room virtually with teachers as on site motivational mentors.

One size fits all? Not in a free market.

And this free market in American education is being practiced where Jerry?

Apparently, all of us here on OL are missing this huge free market educational system that is beckoning us all to come hither.

Yes, you are proof of the homily...
