Not even sabotage? Really? Not even an itty-bitty war with iraq anyone on earth can read about?Gimmee a break. Why am I even posting on this candidate for the Garbage Pile?Someday I'll learn, I guess...Michael
Brant Gaede
There was no Vietnam 1961-1973. There was a North Vietnam and there was a South Vietnam. And the dates are wrong anyway.Michael's right. This is crap. What an insult, inviting us to eat it.There is the knowledge of an expert. Rare and honored. There is mediocre knowledge, usually commonly held. I have a lot of that in my head. There is wrong knowledge. We all have some of this. There is crap, usually agenda driven. If we can just keep the crap out of our heads, we have the foundation of a chance to know what is what. So, what does it mean to bring crap here? Is OL a toilet?--Brantgarbage pile
syrakusos
You guys are letting your conservative prejudices show. Each of the cases of US "aggression" should be examined on its own mertis, but clearly, not every one is an example of a limited government republic defending the rights of its citizens. Libya 1986 might be a perfect example of just that. Vietnam, of course, is a tough case but a full an objective history will only raise deep doubts. After that, the discussions become flamewars. The Iran-Iraq war began when Iraq (under Saddam Hussein's Baht Socialist Party) invaded Iran. The US backed Iraq. Israel helped Iran. From there, again, you can argue, but at least get the basic facts. Is Iran a nice place? No. Do they engage in covert operations? So it would seem based on the recent attack in Bulgaria against Israeli tourists carried out by Hezbollah. But, again, get the facts. For instance, the bomber supposedly had a fake Michigan driver's license and Dearborn has the largest Arab/MuReflexive nationalism is not patriotism. Michael Stuart Kelly
So, what does it mean to bring crap here? Is OL a toilet?--Brantgarbage pileBrant,I'm with you.Garbage Pile it is.There's a difference between examining uncomfortable facts and playing stupid in-your-face games that insinuate that OL readers are either dumbasses or servile. Neither case serves the interest of this forum.Michael

Peter
Just War Theory:Last resort Force may be used only after all peaceful and viable alternatives have been seriously tried and exhausted or are clearly not practical. It may be clear that the other side is using negotiations as a delaying tactic and will not make meaningful concessions.end quoteWe have been grievously wronged since The Iran Hostage Crisis. We cannot let them develop nuclear weapons. They have said what they will do with them. Just War Theory:Military necessity Just war conduct should be governed by the principle of minimum force. An attack or action must be intended to help in the military defeat of the enemy, it must be an attack on a military objective, and the harm caused to civilians or civilian property must be proportional and not excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated. This principle is meant to limit excessive and unnecessary death and destruction. end quoteThose principles are objective. I don’t want the U.S. to be the world’s policeman but I am not an isolationist. And Rand’s or Peikoff’s theory of “nuke them all” needs more precision. Don’t fall into the trap of listing the reasons for destroying Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities without stressing one of Roger Bissell’s clinchers about invading Iraq. To paraphrase, “We don’t know everything but we know enough to say we cannot afford NOT to destroy them.” Peter

caroljane
MEM's note about Israeli support of Iran in the war with Iraq is not well known, but true.Jerry's comprehension of anything is difficult to estimate. If he wished onlly to provoke, he did well.Maybe he provokes you and me, wss, more than ordinary conspiracy nuts or health cranks do, because he sits chewing his twigs under the maple tree. He just offends our sense of Canadian collectivism. When I want to get teary eyed about the average Canadian as on other thread, I have to know he is grumping away on the wrong side of the road on the Queen's Highway.
