I know you do not consider this extremism in the defense of virtue-- but think about those guns, please! It's too weird that we were just discussing guns on another thread, though not surprising, since people are always getting shot because the guns are there. When you build it, they will come. Brant Gaede
If she was still alive, I don't think the hospital would be having a press conference in three minutes.I know this store and area in Tucson. I lived in the area for six years.Because the Republicans now control the House, there couldn't be any political advantage in killing her, but that assumes a modicum of rationality as a motivator. She's not my Congresswoman, but is next door, so to say.--Brant

Don't know how to move the text though.Carol:No problem. If someone rammed the Congressman with car loaded with C4, should we blame the car?If, we had open carry, as the second amendment of the US Constitution guarantees, and the recent Heller decision confirmed, that gunman might not have gotten the third or fourth shot of the fifteen that were allegedly fired and there might be eight people who were not shot.I would direct you to a serious and definitive book by John Lott. I read the original edition, apparently, according to his website which I had never seen, thank you Carol, this is a third edition.http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/493636.htmlWow - what an excellent website he has...http://johnrlott.blogspot.com/Adam

Selene
Thanks Brant:Apparently, the Congresswoman has been responding to "Drs. commands." Very hopeful sign.A Federal Judge, Bush appointee, John Roll was wounded. Nineteen shot. She had a tea party opponent in a very contentious and close election in the 8th C.D. Here we go.Adam Edited January 8, 2011 by Selene

We know that 99% of cars are not used to deliberately kill people, as we know that 99% of bread knives are only used to cut bread, and 99% of blunt instruments are left on their shelves, and 99% of hands do not strangle anybody. 100% of guns are used only to kill living things. That is their only purpose. By the time Kolbe retired, the district had drifted significantly toward the Democrats. In 2004 it had voted for George W. Bush at about his national average, 53 percent, and only narrowly went for favorite son John McCain in 2008. It elected Gabrielle Giffords with 54 percent of the vote against a member of the anti-illegal immigrant Minutemen in 2006; the more moderate Tim Bee fared even worse against Giffords in 2008."Gabrielle Giffords (D)*Bio | Campaign SiteJesse Kelly ®Bio | Campaign Site

william.scherk
Her father, Spencer, is already blaming "The whole tea party."Not quite. But isn't it understandable that an assassination attempt invites scrutiny of the politician's declared opponents? I wonder if Brant and Pippi speculated in their own minds on the motives of the shooter when they first heard the news . . .What a sad and shocking day for Americans. To put Brant's truncated quote in context, as reported by the New York Post, her father was asked if she had any enemies. The congresswoman’s father Spencer Gifford, 75, was rushing to the hospital when asked if his 40-year-old daughter had any enemies."Yeah," he told The Post. "The whole tea party."He added that politicians constantly faced danger."They always get threat[ened]," Gifford cried. "We don’t really have any information. The Police department was supposed to call us but they didn’t."Here is Giffords herself, in an earlier MSNBC clip, talking about danger, rhetoric, and the kind of attacks she faced in her campaign.<object width="420" height="245" id="msnbc498069" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=10,0,0,0"><param name="movie" value="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32545640" /><param name="FlashVars" value="launch=36033690&width=420&height=245" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><embed name="msnbc498069" src="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32545640" width="420" height="245" FlashVars="launch=36033690&width=420&height=245" allowscriptaccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed></object><p style="font-size:11px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999; margin-top: 5px; background: transparent; text-align: center; width: 420px;">Visit msnbc.com for <a style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;" href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com">breaking news</a>, <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032507" style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;">world news</a>, and <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032072" style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;">news about the economy</a></p>
